Jiaogulan (Gynostemma pentaphyllum), also known as "the herb of immortality" or "5-leaf ginseng", is a perennial climbing herb from the gourd family (Cucurbitaceae). It is characterised by its fast-growing nature, long climbing shoots and five- to seven-lobed green leaves. Originally native to China, particularly the province of Guizhou, Jiaogulan thrives in warm, humid climates and can be found in shady locations such as mountain forests, riverbanks and meadows up to an altitude of 3200 metres above sea level.


Appearance

  • Survives temperatures between -15°C and 41.5°C
  • Grows to a height of 3 to 5 metres, depending on climate and soil conditions
  • Five-lobed (or seven-lobed) green leaves
  • Greenish-white, star-shaped flowers from July to August
