Ganesha, the son of Parvati and Shiva, is one of the most popular Indian gods. According to legend, he emerged from Parvati's solitude when Shiva withdrew to meditate. When Shiva returned and cut off Ganesha's head, he regretted his actions and ordered that the head of the nearest living being be placed on Ganesha's body to bring him back to life. This head was that of an elephant, and thus a new god was born, uniting the powers of Shiva and Parvati.
It is said that Ganesha removes all obstacles, which is why he is often invoked before any endeavour. He brings material and spiritual prosperity and is therefore seen as a patron saint for business people. Ganesha should not be missed at any new beginning, be it a move or a new job, as he blesses the new situation and brings good luck.
