How does the ingredient in the medicine work?

The ingredient capsaicin comes from the cayenne pepper plant. About the plant itself:
- Appearance: an annual, approximately knee-high plant with pointed, oval leaves on long stems on a bare, somewhat sparsely branched shoot tip. The small star-shaped flowers are white, long-stemmed and usually solitary.
- Occurrence: Central America, now cultivated in all warmer countries
- Plant parts and preparations used: Extracts, tinctures and ointments from the dried fruit with seeds
When capsaicin is applied to the skin, a pain-mediating messenger substance (substance P) is released from storage vesicles. This initially causes burning pain and feelings of warmth. However, as practically the entire available amount of substance P is used up in one go and the body needs some time to replenish it, the treated area is less sensitive to pain for this time. Capsaicin also stimulates blood circulation by dilating the smallest blood vessels in the skin. The resulting heat leads to a relaxation of painfully tense muscles.

Application

- Muscle pain (myalgia)Consult your doctor if you also experience symptoms such as redness, swelling or overheating of the joints. Consult your doctor if you experience additional symptoms such as persistent joint pain, severe back pain or discomfort in the legs such as numbness or tingling.
