How do the ingredients of the medicine work?

The medicine consists of a combination of thyme and ivy. Thyme has both disinfectant and expectorant (cough-relieving) properties. The latter are presumably due to the stimulation of the fine hairs of the bronchial tubes to move faster. In addition, cells in the lungs are stimulated to excrete more thin secretions. Thyme relieves spasms in the bronchial tubes. The substances contained in ivy are able to reduce the surface tension of the fluid covering the alveoli, similar to soap. Stagnant secretions are thus loosened and can be coughed up.
