Erler Zimmer horse skull in detail
The large, narrow horse skull is an impressive object with long, wide and tapered nasal bones. At the front end of the mouth are large incisors that have been specially developed for cutting grass. At the back of the mouth there are six large, rectangular molars on each side of the upper and lower jaw. The area between the incisors and molars is called the diastem and in some horses also harbours a canine tooth. The eye sockets are located far back on the skull, which is typical of grazing animals. The brain cavity is rather small. This replica was made from the original specimen of a disused police horse and consists of two parts - the separate skull and the lower jaw. The dimensions are 51 x 54 x 30 cm.
