How do the ingredients of the medicine work?

The ingredients come from the ivy plant and act as a natural mixture. About the plant itself:
- Appearance: Creeping or climbing plant with dark green leaves that forms pea-sized, blue-black fruits in autumn and winter.
- Occurrence: Europe and Central Asia
- Main constituents: Saponins, especially alpha-hederin
- Parts of the plant and preparations used: Extracts from leaves, rarely from shoots
The saponins contained in ivy are able to reduce the surface tension of the fluid covering the alveoli, similar to soap. Stagnant secretions are thus loosened and can be coughed up.
