Types of Buddhas
The title "Buddha" is not a surname, but a title of honour that is only given to people who have achieved salvation through their own realisation. The man who usually bears this title is a historical figure. He probably lived between the 6th and 5th centuries BC in northern India and was called Siddhartha Gautama before his enlightenment. The teachings (Dharma) that he revealed and developed over the centuries, as well as the monastic order he founded, are still alive today and are also spread here in the West through the active work of Tibetan lamas.
Kanakamuni
Kanakamuni is an earlier Buddha. "Kanakamuni" translates as "the golden sage". It is said that it was raining gold when he was born. Until the age of 3000, he led a normal family life with his wife and daughter. He then attained enlightenment after only a short period of retreat. It is said that the enlightened man remained on earth for a further 30,000 years.
