Lactulose HEXAL in detail
Lactulose HEXAL® Syrup is an effective and well-tolerated laxative that is used to treat constipation. It promotes natural bowel movements and relieves symptoms that cannot be adequately relieved by a high-fibre diet. The intake of lactulose softens the stool and stimulates bowel movements, which leads to gentle and effective relief of constipation. The syrup is particularly suitable for patients who need an easier bowel movement due to certain illnesses. In addition, Lactulose HEXAL® Syrup supports the prevention and treatment of portocaval encephalopathy, a complication of chronic liver disease.
Indication:
- For constipation that cannot be adequately treated with a high-fibre diet.
- For diseases that require an easier bowel movement.
- For the prevention and treatment of portocaval encephalopathy (liver and intestinal therapeutic agent).
Dosage:
- Adults: 1-2 times daily 5-10 g (7.5-15 ml).
- Children: 1-2 times daily 3-6 g (4.5-9 ml).
- For portocaval encephalopathy: Initial dose 3-4 times daily 5-10 g (7.5-15 ml), then slowly increase to 3-4 times daily 20-30 g (30-45 ml).
Application:
- Mix with water or warm drinks or stir into yoghurt, muesli, porridge.
- Take independently of meals, preferably after breakfast.
- For infants and small children, use only after consulting a doctor.
Side effects:
- Very common: Mild abdominal pain, flatulence.
- Rarely: Increased sodium levels in the blood.
- Not known: Allergic reactions, disturbances in water and electrolyte balance.
Interactions:
- Increased potassium loss with concomitant use of certain diuretics, corticoids and amphotericin B.
- Increased sensitivity to cardiac glycosides with potassium deficiency.
Contraindications:
- Do not take in case of allergy to lactulose or ingredients, abdominal pain, vomiting, fever or fructose intolerance.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding:
- May be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding, no known adverse effects.
Patient information:
- Do not take if the water and electrolyte balance is disturbed.
- Prolonged constipation should be checked by a doctor before starting therapy.
Roadworthiness and operation of machinery:
- No impairment of perception or reactivity.
