Lugol's iodine solution is a chemical mixture of elemental iodine (I2) and potassium iodide (KI) dissolved in water. Originally developed by the French physician Jean Guillaume Auguste Lugol in 1829, the classic Lugol's solution contains 5% iodine and 10% potassium iodide, based on the total volume. The solution consists of three main components: Elemental iodine, which acts as the active ingredient, potassium iodide, which increases the solubility of the iodine in water, and water as the solvent.
A drop of this solution held vertically provides an iodine dose of 6.5 mg. Due to the sensitivity of iodine to light, the solution should be stored in a dark glass container to prevent decomposition.
