What is a ventilation bag?

A ventilation bag is a manual ventilation device that consists of an oxygen reservoir, several pressure chambers, a valve and a ventilation mask or an endotrache alter tubus. With the pressure on the ventilation bag, lead oxygen into the patient's lungs and blow them under pressure (overpressure ventilation). Ideally, use the ventilation bag with a ventilation mask. Experienced specialists can also use the ventilation bags with endotrache alter tubus (ET). The bags are portable and can be easily transported - as a emergency doctor, you should always have a ventilation bag with you as an emergency doctor. With an operation, you should always have a ventilation bag at hand for safety. If the ventilation machine fails, the ventilation bag is your backup. Ventilation bags are also used when transporting patients - in ambulance or within the hospital.

When is a ventilation bag used?

Ventilation bags are always used when patients no longer breathe (if there is any breathing or respiratory arrest) and there is no ventilation machine.

They are therefore suitable for

  • doctors
  • Emergency services
  • Emergency doctor
  • Emergency room
  • Hospitals
  • Medical practices
  • Every emergency bag

How is the ventilation bag inserted?

The mask should enclose the nose and mouth of the patient as tightly as possible. Otherwise the pressure, which is necessary to inflate the lungs, will be handed over to the environment. The ventilation bag is filled with oxygen or air, whereby oxygen is more effective than air. For the ideal respiratory rate, the bag must be pressed together every five to six seconds in adults and every three seconds in children. For the Ventilation With a bag, two rescuers are therefore recommended: one takes care of the correct placement of the mask, one presses the bag.

Important: The response breathing is only effective if the patient has a free upper airway.

What types of ventilation bags are there?

Beating bags for adults: Since adults are larger and need more oxygen, the mask and lifting volume must be larger than in infants or children.

Beating bags for children: Beating bags for children have a smaller mask and a lower lifting volume.

Diligence ventilation bag: Disposable ventilation bags are only used once. They are ideal for the emergency pocket or if, for example, as a resident dentist, they rarely have to supply patients with shortness of breath.

Disinfial and autoclavable ventilation bag: These ventilation bags can be used several times. They are therefore ideal for hospitals, emergency rooms and emergency services, provided that the possibility of disinfecting and autoclaving the ventilation mask is available.

What do you have to pay attention to when buying ventilation bags?

Pay attention to a good feel: In an emergency, good feel can help you effectively ventilate. Therefore, you'd better spend a little more money for bags that enable easy and safe handling.

Pay attention to the number of pressure chambers: Good bags have several pressure chambers. This leaves the pressure curve: even if you squeeze the bag too firmly, there is not too much oxygen out. Without the pressure smoothing, it could be ventilated too strongly, which leads to stomach ventilation and can fatally end.

Note that the mask must be tight: It has to seal it so that no air is lost to the environment. You should particularly with the Ventilation Note from "special cases", such as bearders or humans without teeth.

Fill the reservoir preferred with oxygen: Use bags that can be filled with oxygen. Although they can also ventilate with room air, this has only 21 % oxygen and is therefore less effective.

Use only latex -free ventilation bag: So that ventilation bags can also be used without hesitation in people with latex allergy, ventilation bags and mask must be latex-free.

Suitable accessories

Ventilation filter: Ventilation filters can be combined with ventilation bags and offer protection against bacteria and viruses.

Demand valve: Demand valve is a professional replacement for the oxygen reservoir. It makes it possible to save oxygen with 100 %oxygen supply.

Ambu® PEEP valve for ventilation bags & ventilation devices: This valve ensures that the pressure in the lungs remains on the desired level and does not drop to the pressure level in the area.

Oxygen bottle: With us you will find oxygen bottles in different sizes - handy bottles for the emergency bag as well as large oxygen bottles for hospitals or care facilities.
