The oil smells fresh and resinous because it is produced by distilling the frankincense resin. How is organic frankincense essential oil extracted?
Organic frankincense essential oil is extracted from the resin of Boswellia carterii using steam distillation. The botanical name is also labelled on the bottles.
Water vapour distillation is a very gentle method for isolating natural substances. The extraction of essential oils takes place at a temperature below 100°C and works at normal pressures. The essential oils are not soluble in water, but rise with the water vapour. After the cooling phase of the water vapour, the essential oils separate again from the aqueous phase - the oil can be separated from the water.
