Vitamin E is a vitamin that, together with vitamins A, D and K, is fat-soluble. It is best absorbed in the body in combination with fats and utilised in fat metabolism. The best known and most biologically available form of vitamin E is D-alpha-tocopherol. Vitamin E is one of the most important antioxidants and protects the cells from oxidative stress. Natural sources of vitamin E are vegetable oils such as sunflower oil, maize germ oil, rapeseed oil or soya oil, as well as wheat germ and hazelnuts. Fish and meat, on the other hand, contain less vitamin E. As vitamin E is sensitive to light and heat, oils should be stored in the dark.
