Emla® 25 mg/g lidocaine + 25 mg/g prilocaine in detail
The preparation is a local anaesthetic for application to the skin that provides pain relief with the active ingredients lidocaine (25 mg/g) and prilocaine (25 mg/g). It is applied to the skin before medical procedures to minimise the sensation of pain. The effect is achieved by anaesthetising the surface of the skin, although pressure or touch may still be felt.
Areas of application:
- Before needle insertions or minor skin operations.
- To anaesthetise the genitals before injections or minor operations.
- In adults also before the treatment of leg ulcers.
- Use in children: Dosage and duration adjusted according to age and skin area.
Dosage and application:
- Apply cream in varying quantities and durations depending on the area of application.
- Usually apply 1 to 2 hours before the procedure.
- Special precautions for applications on the genitals or leg ulcers.
- Exact dosage according to doctor's instructions.
Side effects and warnings:
- Possible local skin reactions: Redness, swelling, burning sensation.
- Rare severe reactions: Allergies, methaemoglobinaemia.
- Do not use on open wounds or inflamed skin.
- Use under medical supervision, especially for children and special medical conditions.
