What is melatonin and what is its structure

Melatonin is a hormone that controls the day-night rhythm. It is produced in small amounts in the retina of the eye and in the intestine, but the largest amount is produced in the pineal gland of our diencephalon. Melatonin is formed in the pinealocytes of the pineal gland from the amino acid tryptophan and serotonin: Tryptophan → Serotonin → N-acetylserotonin → Melatonin. It is chemically N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine. Melatonin is not only found in humans and animals, but also in plants, algae and bacteria.

How does melatonin work?

As already mentioned, melatonin regulates our day-night rhythm and therefore plays an important role in controlling sleep and dream cycles. When dusk sets in, the production of melatonin increases. This signals the organs to slow down their processes and prepare for recovery and repair phases. Sufficient melatonin in the body promotes healthy and continuous sleep.

The circadian rhythm (internal biological clock) influences what we do mentally and physically at certain times, such as lowering blood pressure during the night and allowing breathing to become shallower. Melatonin also has other essential functions, including maintaining REM sleep. REM sleep processes events of the day and transfers them into long-term memory. Melatonin therefore also has positive effects on memory and learning ability.

Restful sleep is a prerequisite for health and well-being. Without healthy sleep, the body cannot find the rest periods that are so important for recovery and regeneration. However, there are factors such as stress, worries and anxiety that can make it difficult to fall asleep. Age or travelling to other time zones can also cause this problem. In such cases, melatonin can provide relief.

Melatonin hormone production

Melatonin production increases as dusk falls and peaks between 00:00 and 04:00. During this time, we are normally in deep sleep. After that, the production of melatonin slowly decreases. During the day, melatonin levels are low until dusk sets in again. Due to the brightness in the morning, the production of melatonin can be stronger or weaker. This explains, for example, why fatigue increases in the cold and dark season. Melatonin is broken down less and its effect continues during the day.

Important note: Pregnant women and women who wish to become pregnant should avoid taking melatonin. The same applies to breastfeeding women.
