Laryngeal masks & cuff pressure

A laryngeal mask (laryngeal mask) is used to keep the airways of unconscious patients open. It is therefore standard equipment in most hospitals if intubation fails.

What is a larynx mask?

With a larynx mask (larynx mask), the airways are kept open. It is standard in some clinics when intubation fails.

It has the following advantages:

  • The application is very simple and associated with a low risk of injury. Therefore, the mask can also be laid by unspern staff
  • More stability in hemodynamics
  • Postoperative complaints, such as cough and sore throat, are lower

Find the right size

  • Size 1: Children up to 5 kg
  • Size 1.5: children up to 5 kg - 10 kg
  • Size 2: Children up to 10 kg - 20 kg
  • Size 2.5: children up to 20 kg - 25 kg
  • Size 3: Small adults up to 30 kg - 50 kg K K
  • Size 4: Adults up to 50 kg - 70 kg
  • Size 5: Adults up to 70 kg - 100 kg
  • Size 6: Adults over 100 kg

Components of the larynx mask

The larynx mask consists of a plastic hose, at the end of which there is an oval mask (similar to a bead) made of silicone. This adapts independently to the pharynx and seals the glottis airtight.

For this purpose, the mask can be inflated (blocked) using a Cuff (cuff).

Apply larynx mask in 3 steps

Step 1: Prepare the necessary equipment

Step 2: Carefully insert the mask

Put some lubricants on the larynx mask to make insertion easier. Stand behind the patients and easily overflow his head. Open your mouth as far as possible. Now push the mask down on the tongue on the palate. As soon as you feel a resistance, you have reached the larynx. As soon as the mask is right, block the cuff.

Step 3: Start the Ventilation

Now connect the tube of the mask to the ventilation bag or ventilation device. Using a stethoscope, listen to whether you have inserted the mask correctly and actually get air into the lungs.

When is the larynx mask used?

  • For operations: Larynx masks are often used by anesthetists to guide oxygen or anestheta in the patient's lungs during the operation.
  • With preclinical emergencies: Both emergency doctors and paramedics use the larynx mask for Ventilation of unconscious emergency patients.

What do you have to pay attention to when buying larynx masks?

Does a disposable or reusable mask make sense for your purposes?

For clinics and other institutions that have the necessary equipment to sterilize the masks, reusable larynx masks can be an advantage. Especially in the preclinical area, disposable products are advantageous, which are taken freshly after sterile packaging and disposed of after use.

Use the right size:

The larynx mask is available in different sizes. Adjust the size of your patients to an effective Ventilation to enable. Stick to the size information mentioned above.

Use latex -free products:

This avoids complications in patients with latex allergy.

Note that the larynx mask does not offer any aspiration protection:

Since the trachea and esophagus are not separated, stomach contents could be aspirated.

What is the difference between a larynx mask and a larynx tube?

The difference between the two is mainly of optical nature. Areas of application, application and functionality hardly differ:

Both are alternative respiratory tract that are used in ops and preclinical emergencies.

You will be an alternative to difficult airwaysVentilation mask orEndotrachealtubus used. Both can be used if intubation does not work or is to be avoided (e.g. because they have little practice in it).

Use the method with which you have more experience

Since the two are so similar, you should take your experience into account when deciding. According to the studies, the user's experience has more influence on the success of the Ventilation as the quality or type of device.

Suitable accessories

Ventilation mask: TheVentilation mask Can with aVentilation device, Circular part orVentilation bag be combined. Thanks to the elastic edge, an airtight cover on the face is possible.

Ventilation bag: For the man Ventilation becomeVentilation bag used. They are ideal for emergency doctors and rescue workers and are used as a backup in the operating room if the ventilation device fails.

Ventilation devices: The machine Ventilation with Ventilation devices is a safe alternative toVentilation bag. It enables comprehensive monitoring and severalVentilation modes.

Oxygen bottle: With us you will findOxygen bottles in different sizes - handy bottles for the emergency bag as well as large onesOxygen bottles for hospitals or care facilities.

Endotrachealtubus: TheEndotrachealtubus is inserted into the trachea via the creep. It is characterized by a low risk of aspiration, but is difficult to apply. It should therefore only be used by experienced anesthesia and internists.

Güdel Tubus: This tube is used in unconscious patients and prevents the tongue from slipping backwards and thereby letting the airways move. He is introduced over the patient's mouth.

Wendl Tubus: It is introduced over the nose of the patent and is therefore also known as a nasal hose. It opens or receives the airway in both guards and unconscious patients.

Larynxtubus: It is used to secure the respiratory tract if intubation does not succeed or is deliberately avoided. The application is simple and with little risk, which means that it can also be used by inexperienced.
