What are OP masks?

OP masks are also called surgical masks. They primarily serve to protect the patient during the operation and are worn by the surgical team for this purpose.

The masks are usually green or blue, consist of multi -layer plastic and a special filter fleece.

OP masks must meet certain performance requirements. A distinction is made between different performance types: Type I, type IR, type II, type iir.

Type I masks have a bacterial filter performance up to 95 %, with type II masks the bacterial filter power is 98 %. The R means that the mask better protects from liquids and aerosols.

For medical specialist staff in OPS or in medical institutions Must masks of type II or iir must be used.

When are operating masks used?

In medical facilities:

  • During the operation
  • With care

Outside of medical facilities:

  • To contain diseases that are transmitted by the air

What types of op masks are there?

Classic OP masks type II or type IIR:

They consist of three layers and up to three wrinkles for more comfort. They catch bacteria from the mouth and nose of the wearer, but vice versa do not protect them from inhaling airbacteria or virus particles.

Nevertheless, they also offer advantages for the carrier:

  • Thanks to the mask, body fluids of the patient cannot inject into the mouth of the wearer.
  • The carrier is reminded of not touching his mouth or nose after touching contaminated surfaces

Respiratory protection masks (FFP masks):

Respiratory protection masks protect the carrier from aerosols, germs and viruses. They must be subjected to a tree pattern test and production monitoring. You can recognize this test by the printed CE symbol with a four -digit code.

TheFFP2 and theFFP3 mask are among the respiratory masks. There are also these masks with valvewhich makes exhaling easier. With valve, however, the masks only protect the wearer, but not other people.

  • One FFP2 mask filtered At least 94 % of all pollutants From the air. However, it does not offer protection against radioactive, carcinogenic or other toxic substances. Biological work substances of the risk group three are also not filtered.
  • One FFP3 mask filtered At least 99% of all pollutants From the air. This mask also protects two and three from radioactive, carcinogenic and biological work substances of the risk group.

Important note for COVID-19 protection: From the renownedRobert Koch Institute becomes an effective protection against the coronavirus oneFFP2 or oneFFP3 mask (without valve) recommended.

What do you have to pay attention to when buying surgical masks?

Certification & performance level: For use in the medical field, masks must meet the European standard EN 14683: 2019-10 and be of type II or type iir.
Type of mask: If the mask is also to protect the carrier, the security guidelines recommend wearing a tested respiratory protection mask according to the US standard NIOSH N95 or the European standard EN 149 FFP3.
