Type of use?

Overdose?

An overdose can lead to diarrhoea and loss of fluids and salt, among other things. If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor immediately.
In general: Pay particular attention to conscientious dosing, especially with infants, small children and older people. If in doubt, ask your doctor or pharmacist about any effects or precautions.
A dosage prescribed by a doctor may differ from the information on the package leaflet. As the doctor will adjust it individually, you should therefore use the medicine according to his or her instructions.

What are the arguments against using it?

Always:
- Hypersensitivity to the ingredients
- Intestinal obstruction

Under certain circumstances - talk to your doctor or pharmacist about this:

- Inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases that are acute
- Fluid and salt balance disorders
- Sugar absorption disorders
Which age group should be considered?
- Infants and young children under 2 years of age: The medicine should only be used after consultation with a doctor or under medical supervision.
- Children and adolescents under 18 years of age: In this age group, the medicine should only be used for certain indications. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about this.
What about pregnancy and breastfeeding?
- Pregnancy: According to current knowledge, the medicine has no harmful effects on the development of your child or the birth.
- Lactation period: According to current knowledge, there is no evidence that the medicine should not be used during breastfeeding.
If you have been prescribed the medicine despite a contraindication, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. The therapeutic benefit may be greater than the risk associated with use in the case of a contraindication.

What adverse effects may occur?

- Gastrointestinal complaints, such as:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Abdominal pain
- Flatulence
- Disturbance of the salt balance
If you notice any discomfort or change during treatment, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

What should you bear in mind?

- Only use laxative medicines for a short time without a doctor's recommendation. Longer-term use may lead to chronic constipation and/or other problems. If there is no success after short-term use, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
- Caution: Laxatives are not suitable for weight loss.
- Sulphites (E 220 - E 228) can cause hypersensitivity reactions (e.g. vomiting, diarrhoea) and cramping of the airways.
- Take care if you are intolerant to fructose (fruit sugar). If you have to follow a diabetic diet, you should consider the sugar content.
- Caution if you are intolerant to galactose. If you have to follow a diabetes diet, you should take the sugar content into account.
- Be careful if you are intolerant to lactose. If you have to follow a diabetic diet, you should take the sugar content into account.
- There may be medicines with which interactions occur. You should therefore always tell your doctor or pharmacist about any other medicine you are already taking before starting treatment with a new medicine. This also applies to medicines that you buy yourself, only use occasionally or have been using for some time.

How does the active ingredient of the medicine work?

The active ingredient is broken down by the bacteria naturally occurring in the large intestine and changes the acid-base balance there, which stimulates the intestinal wall to move more. This makes it easier to remove the intestinal contents. The high concentration of the broken down components (sugars and fatty acids) also draws water into the intestine. The intestinal contents are softened and increase in volume. The enlarged intestinal contents cause a stretching stimulus on the intestinal wall and thus trigger the reflex to empty the bowel.
The active ingredient lowers the ammonia concentration in the blood by approx. 25-50% by preventing the reabsorption of ammonia from the intestine into the bloodstream. The ammonia can no longer reach the brain, where it has a toxic effect.

Application

- Constipation

- Facilitates bowel evacuation and softens the stool in certain illnesses, such as painful analgesia

- portocaval encephalopathy (brain damage caused by liver disease)

Dosage

- constipation, relief of bowel movements and softening of the stool:

- 4.5-9 ml

- 1-2 times daily

- children and adolescents up to 18 years of age

- regardless of the meal
