Propolis, also known as bee resin, bee glue, bee putty resin, putty resin or putty wax, is a resinous mass produced by bees. Propolis consists of many different substances, the composition of which can vary. Originally, the word was used with a feminine article, but today the neuter article is also used.
Propolis is used by bees to seal small openings, crevices and cracks in the hive while inhibiting or killing the growth of pathogens such as bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms. The bees cover various surfaces, such as the inside of the honeycomb cells, with a wafer-thin film of propolis. They also use the substance to shield foreign bodies or rubbish in the hive.
The composition of propolis is approximately:
- 50-55% resins and balsams
- 30-40% wax
- 5-10% essential oils
- 5% pollen
- 5% organic substances and minerals
Ingredients: Propolis solution 20 % from propolis extract (approx. 98 % pure propolis) and 80 % 96 % ethanol.
Recommended use: This propolis tincture is intended for cosmetic and technical use. Apply it drop by drop to the appropriate areas. This pure form of propolis cannot be dissolved in water.
