Berk Buddha, 16 cm in detail
The Medicine Buddha is a representation of a Buddhist title of honour, which is awarded to honour people who have achieved salvation through their own knowledge. This statue of a historical man, who probably lived in northern India between the 6th and 5th centuries BC and was called Siddhartha Gautama, is made of brass, is about 16 cm tall and weighs 1.2 kg.
This depiction of the Medicine Buddha shows him in a specific hand pose that resembles the Akshobya Buddha. In his left hand, he holds a healing or herbal pot. In Buddhism, the Medicine Buddha symbolises the healing of all diseases, including the disease of ignorance. Mental poisons present in a person lead to restlessness and ultimately to physical and mental suffering.
The teachings revealed by this historical Buddha and the monastic order he founded are still alive today and are also being spread in the West through the activities of Tibetan lamas.
