Shiva, whose name means "kind" or "merciful", combines many opposites. He is both benevolent and mischievous, both meditative and ecstatic, a god of the whole and yet he has a preference for certain earthly places such as Mount Kailash and the city of Benares. Shiva is worshipped in various guises: as a great yogi who practices asceticism or devotes himself to meditation; as the great ruler of the world or as the lord of dance, Nataraja, who crushes ignorance under his feet and destroys everything that is not based on truth and love. The current great purification phase of our planet is symbolised by Shiva Nataraja.
