How do the ingredients of the medicine work?
Sodium alginate: The active ingredient is used in combination with sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate to treat stomach burning and acid reflux ("heartburn").
Sodium bicarbonate (sodium hydrogen carbonate): The active ingredient is a salt that the body needs to maintain the neutral environment of the blood. If the pH value shifts into the acidic range, for example as a result of lung or kidney dysfunction, this can lead to a life-threatening situation for the patient. The salt restores the disturbed balance. If severe diarrhoea has depleted the body of necessary salts, a solution containing sodium bicarbonate, for example, will replenish the stores.
Calcium carbonate: Calcium ions play a crucial role in activating biological systems. A lack of calcium in the blood increases neuromuscular excitability, while an excess reduces it. Oral calcium supplementation promotes remineralisation of the skeleton in the event of calcium deficiency. The active ingredient also binds and neutralises stomach acid. Calcium forms poorly soluble salts with stomach acid, which are excreted in the faeces. In this way, the substance combats heartburn, belching and other acid-related stomach complaints. It also reduces the risk of ulcers occurring in the gastrointestinal tract as a result of hyperacidity.
