Petroleum spirit (100-140°C. pure) is a high-quality liquid that is filled in a pharmaceutical amber glass bottle. It has a boiling range of 100-140°C and appears as a clear, colourless liquid. The petrol is of the highest purity and contains a maximum of 0.001% benzene, 0.01% water and 0.01% aromatics. The refractive index at 20°C is between 1.403 and 1.416 and the density is 0.720 - 0.748g/cm3 at 15°C. It has the CAS number 64742-49-0 and the EC number 920-750-0. The petroleum spirit belongs to storage class 3 and has the UN number 3295.

The petroleum spirit has various hazard statements, such as the high flammability of liquid and vapour (H225), the possibility of drowsiness and dizziness (H336), the danger of fatal consequences if swallowed or inhaled (H304) and the toxicity to aquatic life with long lasting effects (H411).
