L-tryptophan is an amino acid that the body cannot produce itself. It must therefore be obtained from food. L-tryptophan is found in foods such as fish, meat, potatoes, peas, eggs and nuts, but it is particularly present in high concentrations in milk and dairy products such as cheese.
Tryptophan is known because it is the precursor of serotonin (a neurotransmitter) and melatonin (a hormone). Tryptophan also plays an important role in the production of niacin (vitamin B3).
