Lugol's iodine solution is a chemical mixture of elemental iodine (2%) and potassium iodide (10%) in water. Originally developed in 1829 by the French physician Jean Guillaume Auguste Lugol, the solution consists of three main components: elemental iodine (I2) as the active ingredient, potassium iodide (KI) to ensure iodine solubility and water as the solvent. The addition of potassium iodide allows larger amounts of iodine to remain effectively in the solution. One drop of this 2% solution contains 2.5 mg iodine. Due to the sensitivity of iodine to light, Lugol's iodine solution should be stored in a dark glass container.
