OFTEN QUESTIONED

Saffron - real or fake?

"Saffron colours the cake" - every child knows that. But poultry, fish and risotto alla milanese also benefit from its colouring power and tangy aroma. A small pinch is often enough. Fortunately, because saffron is the most expensive agricultural product in the world.

The precious spice is part of the Crocus Sativus flower, commonly known as the "saffron crocus". Saffron crocus grows up to 20 or 30 cm tall and bears up to four flowers, each with three vivid crimson stigmas. The pistils and stigmas - called filaments - are collected and dried to be used mainly as a spice and colouring agent in food. Around 150,00 saffron flowers are needed to produce 1 kg of saffron spice. This very labour-intensive process therefore answers the question of why the production of this spice is so expensive.

This fact naturally attracts fraudsters who want to make a lucrative business by selling counterfeit saffron.

Every batch at SONNENTOR is sensory tested for flavour, smell and appearance. The sweet smell and characteristic flavour - a mixture of earth, tobacco, vanilla, honey and salty-sweet - make real saffron incomparable. Genuine saffron also has a special appearance: deep red to brown-red threads that spread upwards in a funnel shape. E
