Zovirax cold sore cream in detail
Zovirax cold sore cream offers fast and effective treatment of cold sores with 5% acyclovir. This cream inhibits the multiplication of herpes viruses and relieves pain and itching in recurrent herpes infections (recurrent herpes labialis).
Active ingredients:
- 50 mg acyclovir
Excipients:
- Polyethylene glycol (100) stearyl ether
- Viscous paraffin
- Cetylstearyl alcohol
- Dimethicone 20
- Glycerol monostearate
- Purified water
- White vaseline
- Sodium dodecyl sulphate (7.5 mg)
- Propylene glycol (400 mg)
- Poloxamer 407
Indication:
- Inhibits the multiplication of herpes viruses.
- Soothing treatment of pain and itching in recurrent herpes labialis.
Dosage and application:
- Dosage: Apply a thin layer to the infected areas of skin 5 times a day every 4 hours during the day.
- Duration: Treatment generally lasts 5 days. If the condition worsens or does not heal after 10 days, consult a doctor.
- Forgotten application: Continue the application as prescribed without applying the cream more frequently or more thickly.
- Discontinuation of use: A sufficient duration of treatment is important for success.
Method:
- Apply cream with a cotton swab to treat neighbouring skin areas as well.
- If applying by hand, wash thoroughly before and after to avoid infection.
Side effects:
- Occasional: burning or stinging, drying and flaking of the skin, itching.
- Rarely: Redness, allergic skin reactions (contact dermatitis).
- Very rare: Hypersensitivity reactions such as angioedema and hives.
Interactions:
- No clinically significant interactions known.
Contraindications:
- Do not use if allergic to acyclovir, valaciclovir or any of the other ingredients.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding:
- Pregnancy: Use only after careful risk-benefit assessment.
- Breastfeeding: Avoid contact of the breastfed child with treated skin areas, as acyclovir is hardly absorbed by the body.
Patient information:
- Warnings: Do not apply to mucous membranes, avoid contact with eyes.
- In case of severe immune defence disorders, consult a doctor before use.

- No known effects on the ability to drive and use machines.
